Defence Headquarters Confirms Coup Plot against President Tinubu, to Arraign 16 Officers after Probe

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that there was a coup plot against President Bola Tinubu.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, made this known in a statement on Monday, revealing that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations.
The Defence Headquarters had, in a statement issued in October 2025, announced the arrest of 16 officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.
However, Major General Uba explained that the comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, thoroughly examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.
“The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.
“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,” he said.
He noted that the arraignment would ensure accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria emphasised that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary and form part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.
The military reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.
ThelensNG reports that following the coup plot against President Tinubu’s government, the President reshuffled the leadership of the Service Chiefs on October 24, 2025.
General Olufemi Oluyede replaced General Christopher Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff. Major-General W. Shaibu was appointed as the new Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice-Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. However, Major-General Emmanuel Parker Undiandeye was retained as the Chief of Defence Intelligence.
