Flaws in Petition for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Recall Corrected – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that the flaws identified in the petition for the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Mrs. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recall has been corrected.

Thelensng reported on Tuesday that INEC pointed out some flaws in the petition, stating the petitioners’ information is incomplete.

However, the Commission in a statement on Wednesday said that the required information has been provided in the petition.

“Further to the statement issued yesterday, Tuesday 25th March 2025, the Commission hereby confirms that the contact address of representatives of the petitioners, their telephone numbers and e-mail addresses have now been provided in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Commission dated today Wednesday 26th March 2025.

“As provided in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, a letter has been written to notify the Senator sought to be recalled about the receipt of the petition and delivered to her official address. The same letter has been copied to the presiding officer of the Senate and published on the Commission’s website,” the statement partly reads.

INEC disclosed that the next step is to scrutinise the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners to ascertain that the petition is signed by more than one half (over 50%) of the registered voters in the Constituency.

This, the electoral body said, will be done in the coming days, stressing that the outcome, which will be made public, shall determine the next step to be taken by the Commission.

It reassured Nigerians that the process will be open and transparent.

INEC’s notification letter to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan regarding the receipt of her recall petition reads: “Pursuant to Section 69 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I write to notify you of the receipt of a petition from representatives of registered voters in your constituency seeking your recall from the Senate.

“This notification is in line with the provision of Clause (2a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall, 2024. This letter is also copied to the presiding officer of the Senate and simultaneously published on the Commission’s website.”
