GWR: Nigeria Breaks Global Public Speaking Record, Pushes Toward 480-Hour Target

Nigeria has surpassed the existing global record for the longest continuous public speaking marathon, crossing the 200-hour mark in an ongoing officially sanctioned attempt monitored by Guinness World Records.

The record-breaking effort, tagged 20 Days of Eloquence — Nigeria Speaks to the World, has now exceeded the previous benchmark of 127 hours, 31 minutes, and 43 seconds set in 2018 by Toastmasters District 112 in Auckland, New Zealand.

The marathon speaking event, currently underway in Lagos, is aiming for an ambitious 480-hour target, with organisers maintaining a continuous relay of speakers under strict Guinness guidelines. A designated adjudicator has been assigned to oversee compliance, while the event is being streamed live globally via The Achievement Channel on YouTube.

The initiative is spearheaded by Ubong Essien, Dean of the School of Eloquence and West Africa’s only Certified Speaking Professional, as part of activities marking the institution’s 20th anniversary.

Speaking on the milestone, Essien said the achievement goes beyond visibility. “This is about verifiable endurance. We are demonstrating what disciplined voices, operating within a system, can sustain over time”, he said.

The exercise, which has run non-stop for over eight days, features a structured rotation of participants including notable Nigerians, emerging voices, entrepreneurs, and professionals from both public and private sectors.

Observers say the feat underscores not only the intellectual depth of participants but also the operational discipline required to sustain such an extended engagement. Organisers highlighted challenges such as physical fatigue, mental strain, precision coordination, and the need for continuous audience engagement as part of the demanding process.

The attempt has also attracted support from major institutions and organisations such as First Bank of Nigeria, John Holt, and DHL, alongside the LASWA/OMI EKO Project.

Collaborating institutions include the National Youth Service Corps, Enterprise Development Centre Lagos Business School, Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, National Orientation Agency, Nigerian Bar Association, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

As the countdown toward the 480-hour target continues, organisers have invited the global audience to witness what they describe as a “masterclass in stamina and substance,” with the livestream running round the clock.

If successfully validated, the effort will position Nigeria as the new global record holder in continuous public speaking, marking a significant milestone in the country’s growing influence in thought leadership and communication excellence.
