INEC Debunks Registration of New Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted claims regarding the registration of two new political parties, namely the Independent Democrats (ID) and the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).

INEC debunked the reports on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, clarifying that it has not registered any new political party.

The Commission affirmed that the current number of registered political parties in Nigeria remains 19.

“Nothing has been added,” the electoral body stated, recalling that both ID and PDM were registered as political parties in August 2013.

However, it noted that the parties were deregistered in February 2020 in accordance with Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and urged the public to disregard the reports.
