Nkunku’s Return is Close – Pochettino

Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino has said that Christopher Nkunku’s recovery from injury is close.

Nkunku, 25, is yet to feature for the West London club since he joined from RB Leipzig on a reported fee of £52 million (52 million pounds) in 2023 summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Pochettino has revealed that Nkunku is close to joining the rest of the team on the pitch of play.

“He is doing really really well; is working really hard. He is close and hopefully as soon as possible we can have him involved again. He is a really important player for us,” Pochettino told the club’s website ahead of Brentford’s game on Saturday.

He added: “Maybe after the international break [in November] he will be involved, maybe. It’s not sure. He is a player that can provide goals and we have been missing goals. That is why we think he can be important for us – he has proved he can score goals in the Bundesliga.

“Of course, if you compare with different offensive players, maybe with eight or ten goals from Nkunku our situation is completely different because they are the goals we are missing to be in a different position.”

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager further stated: “We can’t complain and we need to work, so things can happen. So, we are looking forward to recovering him and for him to help the team score more goals, earn more goals, and be a in a different position in the table.”

However, Chelsea also disclosed that the likes of Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia are yet to recover from injury.

Similarly, Pochettino said Reece James will not be rushed into the starting line-up against Brentford tomorrow at Stamford Bridge, despite playing a part against Arsenal the last time out.
