The Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake has charged governors across the country to seek approval from the ministry before making policy decisions on mining activities.

Mr. Alake gave the charge on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with 32 state governors to establish a joint committee to address mining issues, which was hosted by the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, Mr. AbdulRasaq AbdulRahman.

In his remarks, Alake emphasised the importance of collaborative federalism – and reiterated the federal government’s commitment to partnering with states to enhance the mining sector.

The minister explained that solid minerals fall under the exclusive legislative list, stressing that “states should seek approval from the ministry before making policy decisions on mining activities within their jurisdictions.”

He encouraged the state governors to apply for mining licenses to become key stakeholders in the industry, thereby ensuring both revenue generation and environmental preservation.
