Following England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 on Sunday, Gareth Southgate has resigned from his role as the team’s manager.
Barcelona youngster, Lamine Yamal set up Nico Williams to break the deadlock for Luis de la Fuente’s Spain in the 47th minute – and Cole Palmer who came off the bench restored parity in the 73rd minute feeding off Jude Bellingham’s effort.
Mikel Oyarzabal restored the lead through Marc Cucurella’s assist with four minutes left on the clock – and they were able to hold their own for the rest of the game, leading to Spain’s fourth European Championship.
The La Furia Roja won the title in 1964, 2008 and 2012 respectively.
However, Southgate on Monday announced his resignation as the coach of the Three Lions.
“As proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.
“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role,” he was quoted as saying by Fabrizio Romano.
The 53-year-old joined the Three Lions in 2016 – and led the team to the 2018/2019 UEFA Nations League third place finish as well as runner-up in Euro 2020.
