Transforming Fitness Beyond Borders: The i-Fitness Perspective

The Beyond Activ EMEA Conference, held in Saudi Arabia earlier this year, brought together a diverse audience of stakeholders in health, wellness, hospitality, sports and leisure for collaborative business growth.

Folusho Ogunwale, founder and CEO of i-Fitness was a guest speaker at the conference and called for concerted efforts to transform the fitness industry in Nigeria and across Africa.

His insights into the unique challenges facing fitness operations in Nigeria and throughout the continent were particularly impactful, illuminating the complexities of the African fitness landscape. His contributions showcased his representation in Africa’s emerging fitness market and underscored his commitment to reshaping the narrative surrounding fitness in developing regions.

During his panel session, Ogunwale discussed the obstacles hindering the growth of fitness enterprises in Nigeria, such as inadequate infrastructure and fierce market competition. His perspective and expertise sparked important conversations about the future of fitness in Africa.

“Fitness in Nigeria transcends mere aesthetics; it embodies community well-being and an unwavering commitment to resource development and education,” Ogunwale stated. His remarks underscored the importance of creating engaging and supportive environments that empower individuals to prioritise their health and well-being. He believes that fitness should not merely be about physical appearance but should encompass a holistic approach to wellness that integrates community support, social wellbeing and educational initiatives.

i-Fitness has taken an innovative approach by combining technology, community-building, and accessibility to address these challenges. By integrating technology into fitness solutions, the i-Fitness mobile app is a pioneering platform that enables members to manage their fitness lifestyle with personal tracking, showcasing how digital engagement can significantly enhance member experiences and accessibility. This approach not only meets the needs of a tech-savvy population but also provides a flexible solution for those who face barriers to traditional gym access.

By embedding cultural relevance and creative community engagement into its fitness model, i-Fitness has elevated health and wellness standards in Nigeria. Ogunwale elaborated on the positive impact of networking and building a local fitness community, an initiative aimed at underserved environments. “True fitness is grounded in community. By providing accessible fitness solutions, we can nurture a healthier society.” This commitment to inclusivity is vital for fostering and supporting a culture of wellness regardless of one’s fitness level.

Ogunwale’s optimism regarding the future of i-Fitness and the broader African fitness industry is palpable. He aspires to expand i-Fitness beyond Nigeria, buoyed by the positive feedback from fellow attendees eager to explore potential partnerships. He envisions a robust network of fitness providers to enhance individual health and wellness and contribute positively to the region’s economic prosperity.

“Expanding our footprint in Nigeria and across Africa necessitates dedication and strategic collaborations; the potential is tremendous,” Ogunwale stated. His vision extends beyond business growth; he aims to create a legacy of fitness awareness and holistic wellness that resonates across the continent. This vision positions Africa as an emerging market within the global fitness industry and a hub of innovation and growth.

Presently in its 10th year of establishment, and with 26 branches spread across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Ibadan, i-Fitness continues to grow rapidly. The company recently opened its biggest branch in Nigeria at Ago Palace in Lagos, a facility set on 3,600sqm and with parking space for 100 cars. All i-Fitness gyms have world-class equipment, and members enjoy over 40 free fitness classes monthly and benefit from over 350 internationally certified fitness trainers. i-Fitness also offers multi-location access that enables members to visit any branch in the country, giving them a holistic approach to fitness and wellness, and an all-inclusive experience to support their fitness lifestyle.

i-Fitness contributes positively to the country’s economic development through human capacity building and the personal development of its over 900 employees. The company maintains a gender-inclusive work environment, and a partnership with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) USA ensures that their fitness trainers have internationally recognised certifications.

With more branches scheduled to open in the coming months, i-Fitness is expanding strategically, reflecting its vision to make fitness services accessible to underserved communities. The company also offers a suite of wellness services to Nigeria’s leading corporate organisations.

The Beyond Activ Conference was an invaluable platform for Ogunwale to forge connections with global leaders in the fitness sector. Engaging in meaningful discussions about potential partnerships, Ogunwale revealed promising pathways to transforming the fitness landscape in Africa. His emphasis on overcoming local challenges with tailored solutions underscores the urgency of addressing the unique needs of the continent’s diverse populations. The message was clear: the future of fitness in Africa is poised to lead the global dialogue on wellness and social wellbeing.

Ogunwale has emphasised the importance of collaboration in strengthening the African fitness model and facilitating the exchange of best practices and sustainable fitness solutions that resonate with local needs. His journey with i-Fitness continues to inspire, championing a healthier future through community, operational innovation and collaborative growth. By addressing past challenges head-on, Ogunwale lays the groundwork for a multifaceted approach to fitness that can serve as a model for Nigeria and Africa.

The commitment to health and wellness is a global journey that begins at home yet knows no boundaries. The potential for growth and innovation in Africa’s fitness industry is immense, and i-Fitness continues to upscale. Backed by one of Africa’s biggest venture capital firms, i-Fitness and Ogunwale are shaping the future of fitness.
