We Aim to Make Our Correctional Centres Transformative, Reformative – Interior Minister

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said that the plan of the government and ministry is to change and improve the correctional centres across the country.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo disclosed that the welfare of the inmates and personnel working in the correctional centres is also a priority.

He made this known this on Thursday during a visit to the 3000-capacity maximum security Correctional Centre in Janguza, Kano State alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa.

The minister also visited Kuje Correctional Centre to assess the ongoing renovation which is almost completed.

“I am truly impressed to see our correctional centers fast becoming hubs of reform, where inmates are equipped to become productive members of society upon release.

“We aim to make our correctional centers transformative, reformative, truly correctional, and not condemnation centers while also prioritising the welfare of both inmates and personnel,” he said.

Mr. Tunji-Ojo stated that the highlight of his visit to Kuje was receiving two books published by an inmate, stressing that it is a testament to the transformative impact of the result-driven Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He equally said that the ministry under the administration of President Tinubu will continue to strive for excellence and upgrade correctional facilities to meet international standards.
