65 children have successfully undergone free surgeries organised as part of activities marking the 65th birthday of Mr Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Obi made the disclosure on Thursday in a post on X (formerly Twitter), after attending the final follow-up clinic and appreciation programme for the beneficiaries at Mother Mary Hospital, Isolo, Lagos, on Wednesday.
The surgeries were led by Dr Adefolaseye Adebayo, the NDC candidate for Surulere Federal Constituency 1, and her medical team, with the procedures including adenotonsillectomy, which involves the removal of enlarged or chronically infected tonsils and adenoids.
Obi expressed gratitude to God for guiding the medical team throughout the process and for the successful completion of the surgeries, saying all 65 children came through the procedures safely.
The former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate said the experience was particularly touching as parents of the beneficiaries shared testimonies of how the procedures had improved their children’s health and quality of life.
He explained that adenotonsillectomy can help address conditions that cause breathing difficulties, recurrent infections and sleep-related problems in children.
Obi commended Dr Adebayo and her team for their dedication, as well as the hospital management, the parents and everyone who contributed to making the initiative possible.
He said the initiative reflected his belief that birthdays should go beyond personal celebration and provide opportunities to give back to society.
“For me, birthdays are not merely occasions for celebration. They are opportunities to give back, touch lives, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” Obi said.
Obi, whose 65th birthday was on July 19, said he was grateful for the privilege of being part of the initiative and, most importantly, for the gift of “65 healthy and hopeful children”.
He also prayed for continued blessings for those who dedicate their lives to saving and improving the lives of others, while reiterating his belief that “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
