Abuja: NAFDAC Shuts Supermarkets, Cosmetics Stores for Selling Unregistered Products, Seizes ₦170m Worth of Items

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops for selling and distributing unregistered products in the Jabi District and Wuse Market, Abuja.

According to NAFDAC, the supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were closed following consumer complaints and surveillance, which confirmed the sale of unregistered food items labelled only in Chinese, in violation of the agency’s labelling policy, which requires English translations for the Nigerian market.

The regulatory body disclosed that the eight cosmetics shops were sealed for selling banned, expired, and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs, and aesthetic medicines.

“Some individuals at the outlets were also found posing as dermatologists and pharmacists to prescribe harmful products,” it said.

The regulatory body highlighted the confiscated items valued at over ₦170 million, including Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement products, Curvy Weight Gain supplements, Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies, Collagen, and Royal Jelly.

Others are Glutathione Whitening Gummies, White Doll, Dr. Gallery Plus, Maiz Zaki Syrup, Original Herbal Yellow Fever Medicine, Sickle Cell Medicine, Dr. Nafisa Herbal Medicine, Dynewell Syrup, and White Blinks.

It explained that the products are associated with serious health risks, including kidney damage, skin cancer, and neurological disorders.

Commenting on the development, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health, warning that the sale of unregistered or toxic products would attract strict regulatory sanctions.
