Senate Approves Electronic Transmission of Election Results from Polling Units

The Nigerian Senate has approved the electronic transmission of election results from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV) following the completion of all procedures at the polling unit.

However, the Senate retained manual collation for the declaration of results in cases where electronic transmission is disrupted due to network challenges.

The amendment was introduced at Tuesday’s plenary through a motion sponsored by the Senator representing Borno North, Tahir Monguno, who stressed the need for adjustments to Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill. The motion was seconded by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro.

Senator Monguno explained that the adjustments would prevent disputes and operational setbacks during elections.

Under the approved provision, the presiding officer is expected to ensure that election results are duly signed by party agents and security officials present before being electronically uploaded.

The Senate stated that this step is aimed at strengthening credibility, promoting transparency, and preserving the integrity of the electoral process.

It added that the amendment will enhance public confidence while ensuring that the process remains orderly and verifiable.
