President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the continuous development of Nigeria’s maritime sector, describing the industry as critical to boosting the country’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Tinubu stated this when he received the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, at the State House, Abuja, where they discussed developments and issues affecting the nation’s maritime industry.
During the meeting, Mobereola briefed the President on developments within NIMASA over the past two years, highlighting progress recorded by the agency as well as some of the challenges confronting the maritime sector.
According to a statement by NIMASA’s Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward on Thursday, the President said the establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy was a deliberate step by his administration to ensure that the maritime sector contributes more significantly to Nigeria’s GDP.
Tinubu commended NIMASA for the progress recorded so far and charged Mobereola and his team to sustain the momentum and remain committed to advancing the sector.
The President’s position underscores the administration’s focus on harnessing Nigeria’s maritime resources and strengthening the sector’s role in national economic development.
The meeting is coming amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to reposition the marine and blue economy as a major contributor to economic growth, investment and job creation.
