Delta Police Secure Conviction of 16 for Vandalising Govt Property, Drug Possession

A Magistrate Court sitting in Asaba has convicted and sentenced 16 men to three years’ imprisonment each for offences bordering on conspiracy, theft of government property, malicious damage and unlawful possession of prohibited drugs.
The convicts were sentenced by Magistrate Court 3, Asaba, on July 15, 2026, and are to serve their jail terms at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy, theft of iron rods belonging to the Delta State Government, wilful and malicious damage to government property, as well as unlawful possession of 20 cups of Colorado, popularly known as Kolos.
The offences contravened the Criminal Code Law of Delta State and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act, with the prosecution securing convictions on all counts brought against the defendants.
The Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday.
The convicted persons are: Yaro Abdul (25), Mohammed Isah (31), Hassan Jato (23), Azeez Bello (18), Duru Lawrence (27), Tijani Hassan (23), Muasu Alabo (27), Lawal Zardi (18), Gambo Abdul (18), Ali Musa (21), Musa Abdul (18), Umuru Kasa (19), Gaga Amos (25), Sani Garuba (18), Hanza Garuba (24), and Abdul Ahi Jubrin (18).
According to the statement, the successful prosecution underscores the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to protecting critical public infrastructure and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the officers involved in the investigation and prosecution of the case, describing the convictions as a strong warning against vandalism of public assets, theft and drug-related crimes.
The police commissioner also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations aimed at safeguarding public property and maintaining law and order across Delta State.
