Ethiopian Airlines Orders 10 Boeing Freighters to Expand Cargo Fleet

Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed an agreement with Boeing for the acquisition of eight Boeing 777-8F and two Boeing 777F freighters, as the airline moves to expand its cargo capacity and global logistics network.

The agreement is expected to strengthen Ethiopian Airlines’ cargo operations by providing additional capacity to meet growing demand for air freight, while supporting fleet modernisation, operational efficiency and the airline’s long-term growth strategy.

Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Mesfin Tasew, said the agreement marks another milestone in strengthening the airline’s cargo capabilities and expanding its global network.

He said the addition of the Boeing 777-8F and 777F freighters would enhance the airline’s ability to serve customers globally with greater payload capacity, operational flexibility, efficiency and sustainability.

“As demand for cargo services continues to grow, these aircraft will play a vital role in facilitating global trade, strengthening supply chain connectivity, and further reinforcing Ethiopia’s position as a leading cargo gateway between Africa and international markets,” Tasew said.

He added that the agreement also marked the airline’s long-term partnership with Boeing.

Boeing Senior Vice President, Commercial Sales and Marketing, Brad McMullen, said Ethiopian Airlines’ order for the 777 Freighter and the new 777-8 Freighter reflected the strength of the partnership between both companies and the growing global demand for air cargo.

McMullen said Boeing appreciated Ethiopian Airlines’ continued confidence in its aircraft as the airline expands its cargo capabilities and international network.

He noted that Ethiopian Airlines would become the first airline in Africa to order the new Boeing 777-8 Freighter.

The Boeing 777-8F, the newest member of the 777X family, combines advanced technology, improved fuel efficiency and extended range.

According to Boeing, the aircraft has a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes, while offering payload and range capabilities comparable to current freighters. It also provides 30 per cent better fuel efficiency and emissions performance, 25 per cent lower operating costs per tonne and a significantly smaller noise footprint.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates 12 Boeing 777F freighters, two Boeing 767 freighters and four Boeing 737-8F aircraft, with dedicated cargo flights serving more than 70 destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

The additional freighters will expand the airline’s cargo capacity and operational flexibility while supporting its growing global air freight network.
