FG Announces Friday Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government (FG) has announced Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to mark Democracy Day.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Thursday.

Tunji-Ojo noted that June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history, honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in the country.

“Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” he said, while reaffirming the FG’s commitment to preserving democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

The Minister stressed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has pledged to uphold these principles without compromise.

Tunji-Ojo also affirmed that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, will continue to strengthen internal security measures to protect lives and property across the country.

He explained that a secure and stable environment is essential to the health of any democracy and to the broader goal of national development.

The Minister called on all Nigerians to observe the holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection, urging citizens to recommit themselves to lawful conduct, responsible engagement, and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he added.
