Gospel Singer Victoria Orenze Questions Subsidy Removal Amid Continued Borrowing

Nigerian gospel singer Victoria Orenze has questioned the rationale behind the removal of fuel subsidy despite the government’s continued borrowing under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

ThelensNG reports that President Tinubu announced the removal of the fuel subsidy during his inaugural address on May 29, 2023. Tinubu recently requested Senate approval for a $516 million loan to support the construction of sections of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway Project.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Orenze said: “You are not evil only because you are a witch or wizard, you are evil when you are selfish. You are evil when because of a few amount of money they have given you make you type without thinking and attack the truth and those speaking it.”

She also questioned the government’s fiscal decisions, asking why Nigerians are paying taxes with little or no benefit.

“How can subsidy be removed and we are still borrowing? Why are we paying taxes for what we are not getting,” the singer asked.

She further criticised supporters of the current administration, accusing them of sacrificing their future and that of their children for short-term benefits that she said will not last.
