Lagos Inferno: Obi Commends Rescue Efforts, Calls for Improved Emergency Response

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for their coordinated rescue efforts following the fire outbreak at Balogun Market, Lagos Island.

The fire incident, which occurred days ago, gutted the Great Nigeria Insurance House in Balogun Market, leaving several traders trapped inside the plaza.

Reacting to the development on Tuesday, Obi expressed condolences to those affected by the tragedy and sympathised with the families and loved ones of victims who lost their lives in the incident.

“I commend Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency for their efforts so far in coordinating the rescue operations,” he said.

However, Obi noted that more needed to be done, urging the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies to intensify efforts to rescue those still trapped under the rubble.

He specifically mentioned the Omatu brothers, whose distressing phone calls and the public appeals by their family have deeply touched Nigerians across the country.

“This tragedy serves as a poignant reminder that our emergency services need improvement. Let this moment serve as a call to action for better preparedness, stronger regulations, and a renewed commitment to protecting our citizens,” Obi stated.

He further encouraged Nigerians to continue praying for the successful rescue of those still trapped and to support the families affected by the disaster.
