MWUN Lauds Orion Marine, Sea Transport Ltd for Improved Remuneration of Sailors

...Urges Others to Follow Suit

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has commended the managements of Orion Marine Services Limited and Sea Transport Limited over the increment of salaries of its members under their employment.

This follows the implementation of a new review of the remuneration of sailors in compliance with the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) work book.

Head of Media, MWUN, Comrade John Ikemefuna who disclosed this in a statement made available to ThelensNG on Friday, September 5, 2025, described the increment as unprecedented.

According to the statement, the total compliance of the NJIC was achieved by both managements of Orion and Sea Transport as well as the leadership of the Union in good faith, noting that the welfare of sailors is paramount to the administration of the President-General (PG) of the Union, Francis Bunu since assuming office.

Commenting on the signed NJIC agreement, Bunu commended both managements for having the welfare of their employees at heart and putting smiles on their faces.

The labour leader pointed out that both companies have shown examples of what good managements should be, stressing that it is only when workers are happy that employers record optimum satisfaction in the sector.

The PG called on other companies in the maritime sector to comply with the NJIC agreement like Orion and Sea Transport Limited have done by paying worthy salaries to workers or face the wrath of the Union.

Bunu added that such defaulting companies in the sector would be made known to the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for necessary action.
