The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) basketball club defeated Universite de Douala 57-46 in the 2023 African Women’s Basketball League (AWBL) Zone III Qualification game that took place in Alexandria, Egypt.
Led by coach Abdulrahman Mohamed, the Nigerian side took control from the onset, thereby coming out tops in the first and second quarters in a 12-11 and 20-8 result.
Consequently, they finished the half-time of the contest with 13 points advantage.
One of the top performers and team Captain, Nkem Akarawe recorded a double-double of 20 points and 19 rebounds.
Akarawe also had 4 assists, 4 steals, and three blocks, leading to a rating of 32, while Olaoluwatomi Taiwo contributed 14 points and 4 rebounds.
Customs outrebounded their rival 62-42 and also had better assists; 19-7, thus coming out tops in the game.
In another encounter at the MO Arena in Abuja, the Nigeria Customs Women’s Basketball Club got the better of MFM Basketball Club of Lagos in a 55-49 result.
Though MFM gave it a good fight in the first quarter, but Akarawe displayed a scintillating performance yet again, registering a successive double of 16 rebounds and 15 points to earn her side a win.
Addressing journalists after the game, Captain Nkem Akarawe heaped praises on the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for supporting the club.
Akarawe also disclosed the challenges faced by the team and reiterated the input and assistance of CGC Adeniyi in making them a thing of the past.
The Nigeria Customs will now turn their attention to the game against Kenya Port Authority on Wednesday.
