The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu has visited Niger State, following the death of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The miners, who were reportedly arrested over alleged illegal mining activities, were found dead in NSCDC custody in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026.
IGP Disu paid a condolence visit to the state on Friday and was received by Governor Muhammad Bago, alongside other dignitaries and heads of security agencies.
Disu described the incident as a tragedy that demands urgent action, assuring the state government and the residents that the Nigeria Police Force would thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The IGP called for close cooperation between NSCDC leadership and the committee constituted by the state government to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He said death in lawful custody was a grave matter, particularly as the circumstances surrounding the deaths had not been explained.
Governor Bago explained that the deceased were arrested a day earlier over suspected illegal mining, before they were found dead in NSCDC custody.
The Governor said the incident had caused serious unrest in the state, adding that necessary measures would be put in place to ensure seamless investigation.
He stated that forensic examinations and autopsies are expected to assist in determining the cause of death, and pledged to provide full support to the relevant security agencies.
The IGP appealed to residents, particularly the families of the deceased to remain calm and law-abiding, warning that violence would only worsen the situation.
He assured that the investigation would follow strict adherence to the rule of law, due process, transparency, and respect for human rights.
The Police boss said the Force remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting lives and property and safeguarding the rights and safety of persons in lawful custody.
“The Force will continue to collaborate with relevant authorities in fulfilment of this mandate”, he added.
