The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has condemned reported attacks on members and coordinators of NDC and the Obidient Movement in Delta State, calling on the government and security agencies to investigate the incidents and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Obi described the attacks as an unacceptable assault on the democratic rights of Nigerians, stressing that political disagreements should never be settled through intimidation, physical violence or destruction of property.
He expressed concern over the resort to political thuggery and violence, arguing that political influence and authority should be secured through persuasion and the trust of the electorate rather than the intimidation of opponents.
The former Anambra State governor urged the government and security agencies to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation, identify those behind the attacks, and ensure that they face justice, regardless of their political affiliations.
He also called for adequate security guarantees for members of the affected groups, maintaining that Nigerians must be free to organise, assemble, express their opinions, and participate in the democratic process without fear of violence.
Obi declared that the attacks would not deter or silence those affected, noting that their response would remain peaceful, lawful and determined.
He reaffirmed his solidarity with those affected in Delta State, stressing the need for a Nigeria founded on justice, liberty, peace, and respect for the dignity of every citizen.
