Lyon player, Nemanja Matic has said that Andre Onana is one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.
Matic, 36, made the remark ahead of his side’s Europa League quarter-final first leg tie against Manchester United at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday.
Onana had stated that Lyon would be underdogs going into the game, noting that the Red Devils were a better team.
“Of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them,” the goalkeeper said.
However, when quizzed about the quote in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, the former United player remarked: “You need to have cover to say something like that.
“Onana? You know, I respect everyone but to say that, you need to give the answer. If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, you need to think about what you are talking about.”
The midfielder added: “If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar said that then I would question myself, but if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s modern history, he needs to show that before he says it. So, we will see.”
Matic joined Manchester United for £40 million in 2017, and made 189 appearances while scoring 4 goals in the process during his 5-year stint at the club. He has featured in 34 games and netted once for Lyon in the ongoing season.
Similarly, the Cameroonian international joined United from Inter in 2023 and has made 93 appearances. He has conceded 10 goals in 8 Europa League games and 41 in 31 Premier League games thus far this season.
Lyon will be going into the contest with a 2-1 win against Lille in the French Ligue 1 over the weekend and sits 5th (48 points) on the standings, while Ruben Amorim’s men with a goalless draw against Manchester City in their last Premier League tie are placed 13th (38 points).
The second leg will be played at Old Trafford on April 17.
