Shehu Sani Welcomes NYSC Reforms, Urges FG to Retain Military Training
Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has commended the Federal Government for the extensive reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) while urging it to retain military training as a core component of the scheme.
ThelensNG reports that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday approved a comprehensive review of the scheme, under which the military will continue to provide security support.
The reforms also include the introduction of civilian operational leadership, a redesigned six-week orientation programme, a new NYSC uniform, and other measures aimed at modernising the scheme.
Reacting to the development, Sani described the reforms as “a good idea” while highlighting the pivotal role of military training amid Nigeria’s security challenges.
“Reforming the NYSC is a good idea, but we must not discard that element of military training,” he said.
Sani argued that the Director-General of the NYSC should remain a serving military officer.
He emphasised that, in a nation facing serious security challenges, there is a need for even more rigorous military training at what he described as “this material time.”
