The Influence of Don Jazzy in the Nigerian music industry cannot be overstated. His humble beginnings and rise to becoming an icon in the country’s entertainment space is remarkable; one borne out of the love for stringing sounds together to make beautiful masterpieces.
Born Michael Collins Ajereh, Don Jazzy is a multi-award-winning record producer, singer, songwriter, record label executive and entrepreneur who has over the years showed his knack for identifying and making musical stars who have gone on to shine beyond the shores of Africa.
He met with JJC (Abdulrasheed Bello) and the 419 Squad in the early 2000s in London, where they were all part of the UK’s African music scene. JJC, a Nigerian rapper and producer, was leading the 419 Squad, a group of African artists based in London.
Don Jazzy has credited JJC with teaching him valuable skills in music production, songwriting, and artist management. Under JJC’s guidance, Don Jazzy honed his craft, learning from JJC’s experience and expertise.
The music entrepreneur had this to say about JJC during one of his interviews: “I was just a young boy trying to make music. JJC took me under his wing and taught me a lot. He showed me how to produce, how to write songs, and how to manage artists. I owe a lot of my success to him.”
Don Jazzy started playing drums in church at age 4 and later learned to play the piano and other instruments. He has credited his church background with teaching him discipline, dedication, and the fundamentals of music.
He recalled during an interview: “Church was where I learned to play instruments, where I learned to sing, where I learned to compose music. It was like a training ground for me.”
Don Jazzy’s early musical training in church laid the foundation for his future success as a producer, singer, and songwriter. His partnership with D’banj and others helped shape the sound of Nigerian music and paved the way for his achievements in the entertainment industry.
Don Jazzy met D’banj (Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo) in the early 2000s, while they were both part of the Nigerian music scene in London. At the time, D’banj was performing in clubs and shows, and Don Jazzy was producing music for various artists.
According to Don Jazzy, he met D’banj through JJC, who introduced them. They quickly discovered a shared passion for music and began working together. Don Jazzy produced several tracks for D’banj, including the hit single “Tongolo,” which became a massive success.
The duo went on to form the now defunct Mo’Hits Records, a powerful collaboration that took Africa by storm and reshaped the musical landscape. The label went on to launch the career of another top talent – Wande Coal. It also had on its roaster the likes of Dr. SID, D’Prince and K-Switch.
D’banj released three albums under Mo’Hits – “No Long Thing” in 2005; “Rundown” and “The Entertainer”. Another notable project by the label is “Mushin2Mohits” by Wande Coal, and “Turning Point” by Dr. SID. The label also released a compilation album called “Mo’Hits All Stars.”
Don Jazzy’s efforts earned him a stellar reputation, and he was awarded Producer of the Year at the Nigeria Music Awards in 2006.
He once recounted how he produced D’banj’s hit song “Oliver Twist” in just 20 minutes.
He said, “I was in the studio, and D’banj came to me with the idea. I created the beat, and he started singing. I added some harmonies, and the song was done in 20 minutes.” This demonstrates his creative genius, speed, and ability to craft hits under pressure.
After dominating and topping the charts and promoting great talents for years, the duo went their separate ways and Mo’Hits Records became a thing of the past.
However, Don Jazzy went on to establish another music outfit known today as Mavin Records.
The rapid growth of Mavin Records has brought forth a new era of good music. In 2014, Mavin Records was nominated for Best Record Label of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards.
The record label stood out among its peers, creating a lasting impression. Some of the talents signed to Mavin Records include Rema, Ayra Starr, Crayon, Johnny Drille, Ladipoe, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, and Lifesize Teddy. Former acts include Tiwa Savage, Wande Coal, Reekado Banks, and Iyanya. Don Jazzy introduced new genres and sounds to the label, releasing hit singles like “Dorobucci” to critical acclaim.
His unique production style and signature sound resonate with audiences far and wide, making his music classy and impactful. In 2020, Billboard Magazine named Mavin Records as one of the Gatekeepers of the Nigerian music industry.
Don Jazzy’s impact extends beyond music. He has participated in major projects, including comedy skits, showcasing his versatility in the entertainment industry.
Over the years, he has remained a major stakeholder, making his name a household one. His contributions to Afrobeats and Contemporary Nigerian Music have garnered international recognition, leading to collaborations with American stars such as Jay-Z and Kanye West.
He continues to inspire younger talents in the industry.
Don Jazzy’s name will forever be etched in the history books of Nigerian music for his masterful craftsmanship, innovative production style, international collaborations, and his talent-nurturing abilities.
