Nigerians have taken to social media to reflect on the #ENDSARS protests against police brutality, which took place across various states on October 20, 2020.
ThelensNG reports that the protesters sang the national anthem, waved the nation’s green-white-green flag, and engaged in other peaceful demonstrations at the epicentre of the protest — Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos.
Five years on, many citizens, including popular thespian and activist Adebowale Adedayo (Mr Macaroni), have shared their emotional tributes and personal recollections of the demonstrations, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of several participants at the hands of security operatives.
@mrmacaronii wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Nigerian youths lost their lives, jobs, families and dreams at the hands of the most corrupt and evil people we call leaders!!! Even though my people are now in love with their oppressors, this day 20/10/2020 is never to be forgotten nor forgiven!”
@SavvyRinu stated: “Five years on, we can only remember to resist. It shouldn’t have been at the expense of your lives. Many deniers of your deaths are still in power. We failed you and Nigeria failed us. #ENDSARS.”
“RIP to all who lost their lives during the #ENDSARS protests. May their souls rest in peace, and may their sacrifice never be in vain,” @LVHDLVTF prayed.
