2027: God Has Given Nigeria Opportunity to Get Things Right with Obi – Pat Utomi

Political economy and management expert, Pat Utomi, has said that Nigerians have another opportunity to get the country right in 2027 with Peter Obi, urging citizens not to take the opportunity for granted.

Utomi made this statement in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, while reflecting on the circumstances surrounding Obi’s impeachment as governor of Anambra State 20 years ago.

According to Utomi, Obi was impeached by Anambra lawmakers because he refused to inflate the state budget, engage in reckless spending or share public funds with politicians.

He recalled that Obi’s administration faced allegations of gross misconduct over issues including his use of a Peugeot 406, the purchase of locally made furniture, and his decision to spend significantly less than the hundreds of millions of naira approved for renovating the Governor’s Office and Lodge.

Utomi stated that Obi’s refusal to meet the demands of political godfathers and lawmakers turned him into an enemy of the political establishment at the time.

He also noted that although the lawmakers thought his impeachment would end his political career, the courts overturned the action, while the Supreme Court subsequently reaffirmed his right to complete his constitutionally guaranteed tenure.

Reflecting on the episode two decades later, Utomi maintained that Obi’s refusal to share public resources with politicians was central to the hostility he faced.

He described Obi as one of the few politicians in Nigeria and expressed his belief that the 2027 opportunity could enable the country to get things right.
