Maiduguri: Man Bags 1-Year Jail Term for ₦1.1m Employment Scam

A man identified as Gilbert Nosihe Omorogbe has been convicted and sentenced to one year imprisonment by Justice Muhammad Maina of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri.

Omorogbe bagged the jail term on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Omorogbe was arraigned by its Maiduguri Zonal Directorate on a one-count charge bordering on criminal misappropriation to the tune of ₦1,190,000.

The amended charge reads: ”That you Gilbert Nosihe Omorogbe on or about May, 2021 in Maiduguri, Borno State dishonestly misappropriated and converted to your own use the aggregate sum of N1,190,000.00 (One Million, One Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira), belonging to one Sarah Bulama under the guise to secure an employment for her sister and one other person with National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition (a.k.a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons) and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 and punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code Law of Borno State (Cap. 102 vol. 3 of 1994) respectively.”

EFCC revealed that the defendant pleaded “guilty” to the charge preferred against him by the Commission.

Consequently, Counsel to the prosecution, S.O Saka, prayed the court to convict the defendant accordingly, while counsel to the defendant A. A.Yaro, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

“Justice Maina thereafter convicted and sentenced Omorogbe to one year imprisonment with an option of  fine of N200,000.00 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) .

“His journey to the Correctional Centre started when he fraudulently collected N1.1million to secure employment for his victims with the National Commission for the Control of Arms and Ammunition (a.k.a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons) and failed to secure the jobs for them. He also did not return their money to them,” the anti-graft agency stated.
