Seme Customs Moves to Eliminate Trade Barriers Along Lagos–Abidjan Corridor, Engages Stakeholders

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has intensified efforts to eliminate trade barriers hindering the free movement of goods and services along the Lagos–Abidjan corridor through sustained engagement with key stakeholders.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Kaila, disclosed this during a series of familiarisation visits to traditional rulers and sister security agencies within the Badagry axis, underscoring the Command’s commitment to aligning its operations with Federal Government economic policies.

During a visit to the palace of the Oba Akran of Badagry Kingdom, the Controller extended condolences to the royal family and people of Badagry over the passing of HRM De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, describing the late monarch as a respected leader across border communities.

He noted that the visits were aimed at strengthening collaboration with host communities and soliciting support for the Service’s core mandates of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and anti-smuggling operations.

“The purpose of my visit is to introduce myself as the Area Controller of Seme Command and to seek your royal blessing and support to achieve our mandate. Without the cooperation of traditional institutions, effective Customs operations would be difficult,” he said.

Responding, the King Regent of Badagry, Chief Abel Ogunbiyi, assured the Command of continued support, describing Badagry as a peaceful community committed to promoting lawful trade and safeguarding the nation’s borders.

At the palace of the Onibereko of Ibereko Awori Kingdom, Oba Israel Okoya pledged to sensitise residents, particularly youths, against engaging in illegal activities, reaffirming the community’s readiness to support government efforts.

Similarly, the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, HRM Oba Oyekan Ajose Ilufemiloye, commended Comptroller Kaila as a seasoned professional and assured him of the community’s cooperation in maintaining peace and supporting Customs operations.

In furtherance of inter-agency collaboration, the Controller visited the headquarters of the 653 Nigerian Air Force Base in Ahanve, Badagry. The Commanding Officer, Group Captain Hungruy Medugu, reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting Customs activities, noting that both agencies share common operational goals.

“Our collaboration has been instrumental to the successes recorded within our area of responsibility. Your visit further strengthens the existing bond between our services,” Medugu said.

The familiarisation tour also included a visit to the Republic of Benin Police formation, signalling renewed cross-border cooperation aimed at removing bottlenecks affecting legitimate trade along the corridor.

The engagement forms part of broader efforts by the Seme Area Command to deepen stakeholder relations and enhance seamless trade across Nigeria’s western border.
