Former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, has commended Vanguard Newspapers for its contributions to the development of journalism and democratic values in Nigeria, describing the newspaper as an important institution in the country’s media landscape.
Chief Osoba, who is the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) stated that Vanguard had played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic development through its commitment to journalism and public discourse over the years.
He spoke on Wednesday as Chairman of the Occasion at the Vanguard Alumni Book Launch and Reunion held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Osoba also paid tribute to the founder of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Sam Amuka-Pemu, popularly known as Uncle Sam, describing his contribution to the journalism profession as significant.
He acknowledged the dedication of those who had contributed to the growth and development of the newspaper over the years, particularly the journalists and other professionals who remained committed to the ideals of the profession.
Osoba urged media practitioners to continue to uphold the values of journalism, stressing the importance of preserving the profession’s legacy for future generations.
He stressed that the media had a crucial responsibility to sustain responsible journalism and contribute to the development of society, particularly at a time when the country needed credible platforms for public discourse.
The former governor also congratulated the Vanguard Alumni on the publication of the book, The Vanguard Chronology: 40 Years of Nigeria’s Leading Tabloid, describing it as an important documentation of the newspaper’s history and contributions to Nigeria’s media landscape.
He commended the alumni for preserving the history of Vanguard and celebrating the people whose efforts contributed to the newspaper’s development over the past four decades.
Osoba further urged practitioners in the media industry to remain committed to the values that had sustained journalism as a vital pillar of democracy, noting that the profession must continue to serve the public interest.
The event brought together former and serving members of the Vanguard family, media executives, political leaders, and other dignitaries to celebrate the newspaper’s 40-year history and the contributions of its alumni to Nigerian journalism.
