Babangida Lauds Vanguard’s Role in Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy

...Describes Founder as National Treasure

Former Military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has lauded Vanguard Newspapers for its contributions to the development of journalism and the strengthening of democracy in Nigeria.

Babangida, who was represented by the University of Ibadan’s Prof. Mohammed Puta Yahaya, spoke as the Special Guest of Honour on Wednesday at the Book Launch and Reunion of Vanguard Alumni held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The book, titled The Vanguard Chronology: 40 Years of Nigeria’s Leading Tabloid, documents the newspaper’s history and contributions to Nigeria’s media landscape over four decades.

Babangida described Vanguard founder, Sam Amuka-Pemu, popularly known as Uncle Sam, as a national treasure, praising his integrity, principled humanity and enduring contribution to journalism.

He stated that Amuka-Pemu’s life and career had inspired generations of writers, editors and publishers, describing him as a custodian of the nation’s collective conscience.

“You are not just a journalist, you are a national treasure,” Babangida said.

He also commended Vanguard for its role in documenting and shaping Nigeria’s history, noting that the newspaper had, over the past 40 years, given voice to the voiceless and contributed significantly to public discourse.

According to him, Vanguard has not merely reported Nigeria’s history but has actively shaped it, emerging as “a formidable pillar of robust public discourse” and a defender of democratic ideals.

Babangida noted that the book was more than a historical record, describing it as a documentation of Nigeria’s journey through four transformative decades.

He expressed hope that the publication would serve as a valuable historical document for future generations and remind Nigerians of the importance of democracy to the life and progress of the nation.

The former Head of State also urged media practitioners across the country to emulate Amuka-Pemu’s example and uphold professional ethics, patriotism and commitment to the nation.

He stressed that the media had a tremendous role to play, particularly during challenging periods, in promoting responsible public discourse and strengthening democratic values.

The event brought together media practitioners, former and current Vanguard staff, public figures and other stakeholders to celebrate the newspaper’s 40-year history and the legacy of its founder.
