The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Chinyere.
Other details about Chinyere, including her surname, age, and address, are yet to be established.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, Emmanuel is from Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.
Ndukwe disclosed that the 30-year-old suspect was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division on September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., following information that he had allegedly murdered his girlfriend.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect allegedly killed the victim on September 19, wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet of his apartment.
“The offensive odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the Police. The putrefying remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to trace and notify her relatives,” Ndukwe said in a statement on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The spokesperson affirmed that during preliminary interrogation, Emmanuel confessed to the crime.
The suspect reportedly stated that the incident followed an argument between him and the deceased over allegations about who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
He also mentioned that during the argument, he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, before wrapping her remains and dumping them inside the toilet.
Reacting to the incident, the Enugu Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered the State CID to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that the suspect is arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Giwa also cautioned members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends of their movements.
He further advised them to exercise caution about whom they visit or spend time with.
