Former Presidential Candidate of Young Progressive Party (YPP), Mr. Kingsley Moghalu has hailed the President of Liberia, George Weah for conceding defeat to Joseph Boakai in the country’s presidential election.
Moghalu in a post on his X account today said Weah has showed that he is a thoughtful leader after accepting defeat on Friday.
“President George Weah of Liberia has demonstrated great statesmanship by calling and congratulating his opponent, the opposition candidate Joseph Boakai, who has apparently won the closely fought presidential election in Liberia. Weah himself deserves to be congratulated for this example,” he posted.
The former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria also disclosed that other African leaders need to learn from Weah and Liberia for the continent to flourish.
“Only when elections reflect the true will of the people, and powerful politicians respect such outcomes, will democracy thrive in Africa. This requires a combination of strong institutions and patriotic leadership and character. Liberia is setting a good example.”
Weah, a former footballer became the 25th President of Liberia in 2018 – and will hand over to the newly elected president, Joseph Boakai in January 2024.
