‘Account for ₦15.8tn Saved from Fuel Subsidy Removal, Over $100bn Borrowed,’ Obi Challenges Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, as well as over $100 billion borrowed by his administration.

Obi made the call in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, November 7, 2026, questioning the impact of the government’s increased revenue and borrowing on the living conditions of Nigerians.

He urged the President to use his visit to Akwa Ibom State as an opportunity to engage with Nigerians across the country and explain what his administration has achieved with the resources available to it.

Obi also raised concerns over the government’s performance in critical sectors, including poverty reduction, education, healthcare, electricity supply, and national security.

He specifically called for explanations on the number of Nigerians lifted out of poverty, out-of-school children returned to classrooms, and functional primary healthcare centres established during the period.

Obi also questioned the improvement in electricity supply, recalling President Tinubu’s earlier promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the power sector.

On security, he expressed concern that Nigeria still ranks among the most terrorised countries in the world, despite the resources available to the government.

He further questioned the utilisation of increased government revenue from taxation and other sources, particularly the additional revenue which the administration reportedly celebrated last year as having surpassed its target.

Obi emphasised that Nigerians deserve accountability and transparency in the management of public resources, adding that government spending must translate into measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.

He stated that the New Nigeria he envisions must be founded on accountability, transparency, and the tangible impact of public resources on the welfare of citizens.
