AHSOSA Charts New Course at 8th AGM, Seeks Stronger Bond, Funding, Members’ Welfare

The Ajangbadi High School Old Students’ Association (AHSOSA) has renewed its commitment to improving educational standards in its alma mater, strengthening members’ welfare and deepening unity among alumni, as it reviewed its achievements and outlined key priorities for the coming year.

The President-General of AHSOSA, Chief Engr. Tokunboh Owolabi, disclosed this at the 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and 4th Annual Luncheon of the association, themed “Back in Time: Journey Through Decades, School Spirit and Memories,” hosted by the 1995 and 1996 sets over the weekend in Lagos.

Addressing members at the AGM, Owolabi reflected on the association’s journey over the past two years, describing AHSOSA as “one big family united by love for Ajangbadi High School,” and commending members for their dedication, support and passion.

He said the association had made deliberate efforts to add value to what it inherited, particularly by repositioning the annual Founder’s Day celebrations.

“We recognised the importance of our Founder’s Day as more than a ceremonial gathering; it is a moment to celebrate excellence, nurture talent and inspire the students of Ajangbadi High School,” he said.

Owolabi noted that through the generosity of some alumni, sponsorships were secured to cover all annual student awards, a move that reduced the financial burden on the association while reinforcing its commitment to academic excellence, talent and integrity.

He also highlighted the encouragement given to individual sets to initiate projects aimed at improving the standard and quality of education in the school, ranging from infrastructural development and scholarships to educational programmes.

“This journey has been tasking and challenging, but the rewards have been immeasurable. Every sweat, every effort and every sleepless night has been worth it because we are building a future that will benefit generations to come,” he said.

According to him, the association successfully increased the number of awards presented to students, expanded the categories of recognition and reduced its financial exposure by leveraging sponsorships.

Looking ahead, the President-General said AHSOSA is determined to pursue projects that would deliver tangible benefits to both students and members, with particular emphasis on welfare and infrastructure.

One of the priority initiatives, he revealed, is the establishment of a health insurance plan for members.

“Though this plan was announced at the last AGM and a committee inaugurated, we have not yet been able to finalise a concrete arrangement. I assure you that this remains a priority, and we are committed to making it a reality in the near future,” Owolabi said.

He also spoke on plans to embark on a multi-purpose outdoor sports project for the school, designed to enhance physical education, inter-house sports and overall student development.

Appealing for stronger collaboration, he said delays experienced previously were largely due to difficulties in accessing needed expertise from members.

“When we call upon your support, whether in expertise, time or resources, we humbly ask that you oblige us. Let us come together this year as one united family so that such opportunities do not pass us by,” he urged.

On funding challenges, Owolabi identified poor compliance with the payment of individual and set dues as a major constraint, stressing that no association can thrive without adequate financial support.

He appealed to members to prioritise the timely payment of dues, particularly within the first half of the year, to ensure financial stability and smooth project execution.

Membership management was also flagged as an area requiring urgent attention, with the President-General calling on set presidents to submit comprehensive lists of members and contact details to enable the creation of an accurate and functional database.

He warned that failure to do so could result in some members missing out on benefits and programmes meant for them.

Owolabi further underscored the importance of regular attendance at general and Governing Council meetings, noting that all quarterly meetings were successfully held in the past year. He disclosed plans to improve transparency by making financial reports available quarterly in collaboration with the Financial Secretary and Treasurer.

The President-General also announced the need for constitutional amendments to clarify grey areas and align the governing document with the association’s evolving vision, while cautioning against divisive tendencies.

“We must consciously uphold unity and avoid divisive influences such as politics, ethnicity or religion. AHSOSA thrives when we are united as one family, bound by shared values and a common purpose,” he said.

Owolabi expressed gratitude to all members and the Executive Committee for their support and hard work, urging sustained commitment to building a lasting legacy.

“AHSOSA is one big family. Let us continue to walk together, grow together and achieve together. Together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish,” he concluded.

The AGM and luncheon brought together alumni from different graduating sets to celebrate shared memories while recommitting to the progress of Ajangbadi High School and its Old Students’ Association.
