Barr. Morayo Lebi Speaks on Law, Leadership and Vision for Ondo South

A seasoned legal practitioner, real estate entrepreneur and long-standing political figure, Barrister Morayo Lebi (BML) offers a compelling narrative of resilience, service and vision.

In this interview, he reflects on his humble beginnings, distinguished legal career, and contributions to Nigeria’s real estate sector. He also shares his perspectives on infrastructure, housing challenges, and the developmental needs of Ondo South Senatorial District.

While remaining measured about his political ambitions, BML underscores his commitment to purposeful leadership, inclusive governance and sustainable development.

Excerpts.

Q: Good day, Barr. Morayo Lebi. Can we meet you? We would like you to tell us about yourself, your family background, and your academic journey.

BML: I was born 61 years ago, on 25 March, 1965, in Akotogbo, Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State. My beloved mother, originally from Ajagba—a neighbouring community, had already reached menopause and was not expecting another child. However, by divine orchestration, I arrived against all odds. You could rightly call me a miracle child.

I completed my primary education at Saint Patrick Catholic Primary School, Akotogbo, before moving to Lagos for my secondary education at Igbobi College, Yaba. I later obtained a law degree from the University of Lagos.

I have been in legal practice for nearly 36 years, dedicating my life to the profession. Beyond law, I am involved in business ventures, particularly in real estate and property development. I am also a Fellow of professional bodies such as the Debt Recovery Institute of Nigeria and the Nigerian Institute of Insolvency.

As a devout Christian, I worship at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Lagos. I am happily married and blessed with children and grandchildren.

Q: Can you share insights into your legal career and some of your major achievements?

BML: Looking back, I believe God deliberately guided me into the legal profession. Interestingly, I was in the science class in secondary school but eventually found my way into law—a path I now see as divinely ordained.

My legal career began in Kano during my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Owing to my dedication and work ethic, the law firm entrusted me with responsibilities beyond my level at the time. This challenged me to conduct extensive research and sharpen my skills.

That experience inspired me to establish my own practice upon returning to the West. I started in Ijebu-Ode, later moved to the Palmgrove area of Lagos, and eventually to my current office in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi.

Over the years, my chambers have earned a reputation as a “People’s Chamber”, as we have handled numerous cases—many on a pro bono basis for the less privileged. One notable case was against Mobil Plc, where we represented the Hausa community in Boundary, Ajegunle, Lagos, and secured victory on their behalf.

Practising law during the military era was particularly challenging, but we remained steadfast in defending citizens’ rights, even when it meant confronting military authorities. I remain deeply grateful to God for His faithfulness and the privilege of serving in this profession.

Q: As a lawyer and real estate practitioner, what is your perspective on Nigeria’s infrastructure development?

BML: One does not need to be in real estate to assess Nigeria’s infrastructure. While some may describe it as inadequate, I prefer to see it as a work in progress.

Historically, from the First Republic through successive military regimes, significant efforts have been made. For instance, under General Yakubu Gowon, major roads and bridges such as Carter Bridge were constructed, while under General Ibrahim Babangida, the Third Mainland Bridge was built. The ongoing Coastal Road project from Calabar to Lagos is also noteworthy.

That said, much still needs to be done, particularly in housing and urban planning.

Q: The housing sector in Nigeria faces many challenges. As a stakeholder, what are your thoughts on possible solutions?

BML: Housing is one of the basic necessities of life, alongside food and clothing. Given Nigeria’s large population, the government alone cannot meet housing needs.

Private sector players are making meaningful contributions, but financial constraints—especially limited access to affordable credit remain a major hurdle. Government and financial institutions must collaborate to provide better financing options, such as low-interest mortgage schemes, to encourage homeownership.

Q: What contributions have you made towards addressing real estate challenges in Nigeria?

BML: The challenges in the real estate sector are quite complex, particularly due to the land tenure system, which places significant control in the hands of government.

As a practitioner, I have focused on making property ownership more accessible. For example, we have developed properties in prime locations such as Lagos Island, with affordability in mind for middle-income earners. The response has been encouraging, and we remain committed to bridging the housing gap.

Q: Are you running for the senatorial ticket for your zone again? What sets you apart from other APC aspirants?

BML: At present, the electoral body has not officially declared the campaign period open, and as a lawyer, I am careful not to engage in any illegality. When the time is right, I will inform the public of my decision.

That said, my agenda for the overall development of the district distinguishes me. My passion, vision and commitment set me apart. My vision centres on restoring our district’s status across all developmental indices.

This vision is articulated in our manifesto, which outlines practical steps to: re-engineer the resources of Ondo South for full economic potential; rebuild institutions to ensure equitable access to democratic dividends; promote inclusive governance for a prosperous Ondo South and harness the talents of our youth through active participation in governance and development

Q: Why did you choose APC, considering the number of aspirants?

BML: I am one of the pioneer members of APC in the state. A few months ago, I was honoured with an award as the “Ondo State Outstanding Sponsor of the Progressive Party of the Decade” by Golden Rule Magazine. This reflects my long-standing commitment to the party.

While many aspirants may be driven by personal ambition, I can confidently say I am among those who have contributed to building the party. APC remains a broad and inclusive platform capable of accommodating diverse aspirations.

However, considering my pedigree, commitment, contributions and grassroots reach, I believe I am well-positioned to secure the ticket.

Q: Ondo South Senatorial District faces some peculiar challenges. Can you highlight them?

Barrister Morayo Lebi

BML: Thank you. The situation in Ondo South can best be described as poverty in the midst of plenty.

One of the most pressing challenges is electricity. For over 15 years, about 80 per cent of our people have lived without power, except for recent interventions by the NDDC in parts of Okitipupa and Igbokoda. This has significantly hindered economic activities.

Other major challenges include youth unemployment, poverty, and poor infrastructure—particularly roads linking farmers to markets.

That said, I commend the current Governor for approving key road projects such as the Akotogbo–Ijuosun Road and the Okitipupa–Igbokoda dualisation, among others.

Ondo South requires competent representation to complement these efforts. With my experience in both private and corporate sectors, I am well-equipped to navigate legislative processes, perform oversight functions, and attract meaningful development projects to the district.

Q: Tell us about your immediate family and how you unwind.

BML: I am happily married, blessed with children and grandchildren. I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, travelling, and keeping fit.
