Chelsea Football Club have announced the ousting of manager Enzo Maresca following a run of poor results in December 2025.
Maresca, 45, officially joined Chelsea on July 1, 2024, signing a five-year contract until 2029, with an option for a one-year extension. Upon his arrival, he led the club to victory in the 2024/2025 UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
Chelsea failed to win their last three Premier League games, drawing 2-2 with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa at home, and drawing 2-2 against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. Consequently, they currently sit fifth in the league standings with 30 points after 19 games.
Similarly, the West London club is 13th in the UEFA Champions League table with 10 points after six games, eight points behind leaders and London rivals Arsenal. However, they remain in contention in both the EFL Cup and FA Cup.
Maresca had previously claimed that the club’s ownership was not fully supporting him, describing the build-up to their 2-0 home victory over Everton as the worst 48 hours of his time at Chelsea.
In a statement on Thursday, the club said: “Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company. During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions.
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track. We wish Enzo well for the future.”
Following Maresca’s departure, it remains to be seen who will lead Chelsea in their crucial tie against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, January 4, 2025.
