Lawyer and political activist Dele Farotimi has announced his exit from Afenifere while reaffirming his commitment to social democracy.
Afenifere is a socio-cultural organisation representing the interests of the Yoruba people.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Farotimi expressed gratitude to Nigerians and the organisation for the opportunity to share his thoughts, convictions, and vision for the country over the years.
He noted that his association with Afenifere had been an important part of his public engagement and contribution to their collective aspirations.
Farotimi recalled that his association with the organisation dates back to 1998, when he served as the pioneer Chairman of Binukonu.
“It has been a long journey, and I remain grateful for the experiences and opportunities it afforded me, as well as the platform it provided to contribute to our collective aspirations. However, every journey, no matter how long, must eventually come to an end.
“Today, I bring my association with Afenifere to a close. I hereby formally sever all ties with the organisation and its leadership. Henceforth, the leadership of Afenifere does not represent my views, and I no longer speak for or identify with its positions or actions,” he affirmed.
The lawyer stated that although there was a time and place for everything under the sun, he was not ready to explain the reasons behind what he described as a painful but necessary decision.
Farotimi stressed that he had chosen not to offer any further explanation and urged the public to respect and accept his decision.
He also expressed gratitude for the support, engagement, and opportunity to share the journey with the organisation.
Reaffirming his commitment to social democracy, he said: “My commitment to the birth of a nation founded on the social democratic principles of the Action Group (Afenifere) remains unchanged, and I shall remain undaunted in my pursuit of these principles and ideals.”
