FCFMT, MARCON Move to Deepen Collaboration

The Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT), Lagos, and the Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) have moved to strengthen their relationship and deepen engagement between the institution and maritime journalists.

The development followed a courtesy visit by the executives of MARCON to FCFMT recently, to foster closer collaboration and explore areas of mutual interest between the college and the maritime media.

The MARCON delegation was received by the Deputy Provost (Academics), Dr. (Mrs) Adebowale Aderonke, who represented the Provost, Dr. Chuks Paul Onuoha.

Speaking during the visit, MARCON President, Ismail Aniemu, said the organisation recognised FCFMT as a strategic institution in Nigeria’s maritime and fisheries sectors, particularly for its contribution to manpower development.

Aniemu said MARCON was committed to developing a sustained relationship with the college that would enable journalists covering the maritime sector to better understand its programmes, activities and achievements, while providing FCFMT with a stronger platform to communicate its contributions to the development of Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy.

He said greater interaction between the institution and the media would promote more informed reporting of fisheries, maritime education, manpower development and other issues critical to the growth of the sector.

The MARCON President also highlighted the organisation’s commitment to promoting issues around Nigeria’s marine resources and coastal economy through professional journalism and sustained engagement with relevant institutions.

Responding, the Deputy Provost, who spoke on behalf of the Provost, welcomed the visit and expressed the college’s readiness to strengthen its relationship with MARCON and other stakeholders in the maritime industry.

The college also agreed to participate in MARCON’s forthcoming conference on sustainable fishing in Nigeria, scheduled for September 30, 2026, in Lagos.

The visit ended with both organisations expressing their commitment to sustained engagement and collaboration in promoting the development of Nigeria’s fisheries, maritime education and the wider blue economy.
