NAFDAC Clears BON Bread Manufacturer Over Shelf-Life Allegations

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cleared BON Bread manufacturer, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, following an investigation into allegations regarding the product’s shelf life.
The investigation followed a claim made on social media on April 13, 2026, alleging that a loaf of bread had remained mould-free for over two months. Although the complainant did not identify the brand, the manufacturer of BON Bread publicly responded, stating that the product in question was theirs and describing the allegation as misleading.
In a statement signed on Sunday by its Director-General/CEO, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC affirmed that the company operates in compliance with its regulatory standards
“In response to online concerns, NAFDAC immediately commenced a scientific investigation to ascertain the facts. As part of the investigation, the Agency conducted an inspection of the company’s bakery facility in Abuja and collected bread samples from both the production site and the open market for laboratory analysis.
“Findings revealed that the bread contained calcium propionate, an approved preservative commonly used in bread production, within the permissible limits specified by the Codex Alimentarius, the internationally recognised food standards framework,” Prof. Adeyeye said.
According to her, laboratory analysis confirmed that the bread samples did not contain objectionable substances, including bromate or non-nutritive sweeteners.
Adeyeye also confirmed that the company has maintained regulatory compliance since commencing operations in 2006 and has successfully undergone several licence renewals without any penalties or product recalls.
She reiterated that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited is not in violation of any NAFDAC regulations and encouraged members of the public to report concerns relating to regulated products through any of the Agency’s offices nationwide or via its call centre, to enable prompt and evidence-based investigation of complaints.
