The Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over 32,412 parcels of hard drugs and 92 sacks of raw cannabis sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) between January and August 2026.
The Acting Customs Area Controller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, disclosed this during a press briefing on the activities of the Command from 24th of June 2026 to date, in Idiroko, Ogun State on Thursday, where he formally handed over 6,035 parcels of Ghana Loud/Indica seized from smugglers to the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command.
“Fom January to date, Ogun I command under my watch has handed over 32,412 parcels of hard drugs and 92 Sacks of raw cannabis sativa to NDLEA Idiroko special command”, he said.
Afeni said the latest seizure was part of the Command’s sustained campaign against drug trafficking and other forms of smuggling along the nation’s border.
He said smugglers had become increasingly desperate, adopting sophisticated concealment methods in their attempts to move illicit drugs into the country.
“Our intelligence networks, technological integration, and the raw determination of our officers on the frontline have proven superior. We have consistently dismantled their networks, intercepted their goods, and choked their supply lines”.
The Acting Controller said the Command would continue to make the Ogun I axis hostile to smugglers and criminal syndicates attempting to use the border as a transit route for illicit substances.
Afeni explained that the seizure of 6,035 parcels of Ghana Loud/Indica was particularly significant given the potential consequences of the drugs on communities, especially young people.
According to him, the trafficking of high-potency variants of cannabis, including Ghana Loud, Colorado and Cannabis sativa, was not a victimless crime, as it could fuel violence, undermine communities and contribute to other criminal activities.
He stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration in tackling drug trafficking, noting that no single security or enforcement agency could effectively secure the country alone.
He explained that while Customs’ mandate included the interception and seizure of prohibited goods, the specialised fight against drug trafficking required sustained collaboration with agencies such as the NDLEA for investigation, prosecution and further enforcement action.
While formally handing over the seized narcotics to the Commander of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command in line with established procedures and legal requirements, Afeni warned smugglers and drug trafficking syndicates against attempting to use the Ogun I border corridor as a transit route for illicit substances.
“To the syndicates and smugglers who think they can use Ogun I Command as a transit route for poison, hear this clearly. We are adapting faster than you are. If you do not trade legitimately, we will continue to seize your goods, impound your vehicles, and send you to prison”, he added.
