Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC (SAHCO) has strengthened its passenger handling services with the acquisition and deployment of a high-capacity AmbuLift to improve assistance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM).
The specialised equipment, which makes SAHCO the only aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to own and operate an AmbuLift, is designed to provide safe and dignified embarkation and disembarkation for wheelchair users and passengers requiring stretcher support.
According to SAHCO’s Head, Corporate Communications, Mrs Adetola Vanessa Uansohia, the acquisition forms part of the company’s continued investment in equipment and services aimed at improving passenger safety and accessibility.
The AmbuLift features a hydraulic lifting system that raises its enclosed cabin to aircraft-door level, enabling passengers with reduced mobility to be transferred safely, particularly at remote stands or locations where passenger boarding bridges are unavailable.
The acquisition builds on SAHCO’s earlier investment in Evac-Chairs, which facilitate the safe embarkation and disembarkation of passengers with reduced mobility on aircraft steps where specialised assistance is required.
Together, the AmbuLift and Evac-Chairs are expected to strengthen SAHCO’s PRM handling capabilities and improve the experience of passengers requiring additional assistance.
SAHCO’s premium customer, British Airways, also provided guidance throughout the acquisition process to ensure that the AmbuLift’s deployment, procedures and operational standards align with global best practices and the expectations of international airlines.
Speaking on the development, SAHCO’s Chairman, Dr Taiwo Afolabi, CON, said the equipment would enable the company to respond more effectively to the needs of passengers with reduced mobility.

Prior to its deployment, Expavia Aviation Consultants, a UK-based aviation consultancy, provided project advisory and coordination support for the testing, commissioning, certification and training programme.
Ergon Training Center, a European GSE specialist, also delivered theoretical and practical training, technical inspections and functional checks at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Following the training programme, SAHCO’s designated AmbuLift operators achieved certification in accordance with IATA AHM 1110 RMP 14m standards.
The company said the interventions reinforce its focus on ensuring that its equipment is modern and fit for purpose, while being operated and maintained in line with required safety and operational standards.
The AmbuLift complements SAHCO’s aviation support services, including Passenger Handling, Baggage Handling, Ramp Handling, Cargo Handling, Aviation Security Services and Premium Lounge Services.
SAHCO said it would continue to invest in modern equipment, technology, infrastructure and personnel to strengthen safety, improve operational efficiency and enhance passenger and airline experiences across its operations.
