World Environment Day: WIMA Nigeria Leads Tree-Planting Drive in Apapa, Advocates Greener Future

Women in Maritime Africa (WIMA Nigeria) has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability with a symbolic tree-planting exercise in Apapa, Lagos, as part of activities commemorating the 2026 World Environment Day.

The event, which brought together WIMA Nigeria executives, ambassadors, members, and stakeholders, served as a practical demonstration of the association’s dedication to environmental stewardship, climate action, and sustainable development.

Held under the WIMAfrica initiative themed “One Woman, One Tree, One Future,” the exercise underscored the critical role trees play in preserving ecosystems, combating climate change, and safeguarding the future of generations yet unborn.

President of WIMA Nigeria, Mrs. Theodora Nwaeze, emphasised the significance of tree planting as a long-term investment in a healthier and more sustainable environment.

According to her, trees provide clean air, combat climate change, prevent soil erosion, preserve biodiversity, and improve the quality of life for communities worldwide.

She urged individuals, organisations, and communities to embrace tree planting beyond commemorative events, stressing that collective action remains the key to building a resilient and environmentally sustainable future.

“As we celebrate World Environment Day, let us renew our commitment to environmental conservation. Every tree planted today is an investment in a greener tomorrow. Together, we can leave a lasting legacy of sustainability for future generations,” she said.

Speaking at the event, WIMA Nigeria Ambassador, Chief Mrs. Carol Ufere, commended the executive team for aligning with the broader WIMAfrica vision through the tree-planting initiative.

Describing trees as an essential component of life, she noted that they help cool the environment, improve air quality, preserve biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of erosion.

She also endorsed a proposal by fellow WIMA Ambassador, Ify Akerele, advocating a partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to extend tree-planting activities along port access roads and other strategic maritime corridors.

“This is a great initiative. Trees are life. They help create a healthier environment and protect nature. We must continue to expand this campaign and encourage relevant government agencies and private sector stakeholders to join us in making our environment greener,” she said.

Ambassador Ify Akerele, in her remarks, challenged members to take the initiative beyond the event venue and make environmental sustainability a personal responsibility.

“The tree you plant today should not be the last. Let this become a regular practice. Take the initiative to your homes, workplaces, and communities. Let government and other stakeholders see the impact and be encouraged to key into the movement. That is how real change begins,” she said.

Also speaking, Vice President, Anglophone Region of WIMAfrica, Mrs. Rollens Macfoy, praised the commitment and consistency of WIMA Nigeria ambassadors and members who continue to support the association’s programmes.

She highlighted the indispensable role of trees in sustaining human life through oxygen production and environmental balance, while encouraging members to deepen collaboration, networking, and mutual support beyond environmental advocacy.

“If we continue with initiatives like this, it will be a remarkable achievement for all of us. Beyond tree planting, we must continue to support one another, strengthen our networks, build partnerships, and lift each other to greater heights both professionally and personally,” she stated.

WIMA Nigeria Coordinator, Mrs. Faithhope Aloyious, described tree planting as more than a ceremonial exercise, noting that it symbolizes hope, renewal, and a collective commitment to a healthier planet.

She stressed that every tree planted contributes to cleaner air, improved public health, and a more sustainable future, while urging participants to adopt environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives.

For the Vice President of WIMA Nigeria, Mrs. Temilade Ogunniyi, the observance was a call to action for individuals across all sectors of society. She explained that environmental protection is a collective responsibility that transcends professions and industries.

“The essence of today’s event is to encourage everyone to protect the future. Whether at home, in our workplaces, or within our communities, we must make tree planting a habit. By doing so, we create cleaner environments, breathe fresher air, and reduce health risks associated with environmental degradation,” she said.

On her part, Secretary-General of WIMA Nigeria, Mrs. Obiageli Benjamin, expressed appreciation to the ambassadors, members, and stakeholders whose presence contributed to the success of the programme.

Reflecting on the significance of the exercise, she noted that participants had done more than simply plant trees.

“Today, we have not just planted trees; we have planted hope, life, and a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship. The impact of what we have done here will continue to benefit future generations,” she said.

The event concluded with participants pledging to sustain the campaign by encouraging tree planting within their communities and supporting initiatives aimed at protecting the environment.

For WIMA Nigeria, the message was clear: safeguarding the environment is not the responsibility of a few, but a collective duty that requires continuous action, commitment, and collaboration.

Through initiatives such as the World Environment Day tree-planting campaign, the association hopes to inspire more individuals and organisations to become active champions of a greener and more sustainable future.
