As part of efforts to ensure inclusivity, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has partnered with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to enrol and issue National Identification Numbers (NINs) to 59,786 inmates across the country.
The Head of the Corporate Communications Unit at NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, made this known in a statement on Monday.
According to the statement, the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is geared towards enrolling all Nigerians and legal residents.
“To date, 74% of inmates have been enrolled and issued NINs, with the remaining inmates to be enrolled in the ongoing inmate enrollment,” the statement noted.
The Commission expressed gratitude to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; the Comptroller-General of NCoS, Nwakuche Ndidi; and the management and staff of the Service for their support.
It also announced plans to commence ward-level enrolment across the country, describing it as a key component of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen the National Identity System.
Speaking on the initiative, the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, stated that the Commission aims to work with strategic partners to enrol and issue NINs to all Nigerians and legal residents in every ward, ensuring that no one is left behind.
