Customs CG Adeniyi’s Re-election as WCO Council Chairperson Elevates Nigeria’s Global Standing – MARCON

The Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) has said the re-election of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, PhD, as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council has further elevated Nigeria’s standing in the global customs community, describing the development as a significant endorsement of the country’s growing influence in international customs administration.

The association noted that Adeniyi’s renewed mandate reflects the confidence reposed in his leadership by customs administrations across the world and underscores the impact of the far-reaching reforms he has championed at the Nigeria Customs Service.

In a congratulatory message jointly signed on Thursday by MARCON President, Ismail Aniemu, and Secretary, Olamide Osho, the association praised the Customs CG for his exemplary leadership, transformative reforms and unwavering commitment to advancing customs administration in Nigeria and across the globe.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Aniemu described the re-election as a well-deserved recognition of Adeniyi’s exceptional leadership qualities and immense contributions to the global customs community.

“Your re-election as Chairperson of the WCO Council is not only a personal achievement but also a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent. It is a clear demonstration of the confidence the international customs community has in your vision, competence and reform-driven leadership,” he said.

Aniemu stated that Adeniyi’s emergence and subsequent re-election as Chairperson of the WCO Council have projected the Nigeria Customs Service onto the global stage, strengthening Nigeria’s voice in international customs administration, trade facilitation and cross-border cooperation.

“This remarkable accomplishment has projected the Nigeria Customs Service onto the global stage and reinforced Nigeria’s standing as a respected voice among the comity of nations shaping the future of international customs administration and global trade,” he added.

The association said the reforms implemented under Adeniyi’s leadership, including the deployment of the B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System, sustained improvements in revenue generation, enhanced anti-smuggling operations, digital transformation and stronger stakeholder engagement, have repositioned the Service as one of Africa’s leading customs administrations.

MARCON noted that these initiatives have improved operational efficiency, strengthened transparency and accountability, enhanced public confidence in the Service and contributed to the Federal Government’s drive to improve the ease of doing business.

The association expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s renewed mandate at the WCO Council would deepen international cooperation, accelerate global customs modernisation and create greater opportunities for Nigeria to contribute meaningfully to the formulation of international customs and trade policies.

MARCON wished the Comptroller-General a successful second term as Chairperson of the WCO Council and reaffirmed its support for reforms aimed at building a more efficient, transparent and globally competitive Nigeria Customs Service.
