The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has congratulated the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Nigeria’s successful election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Category ‘C’ Council seat, describing the outcome as a major boost for the nation’s maritime sector.
In a congratulatory message issued on behalf of the union, President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, said the victory has repositioned Nigeria among leading maritime nations and reaffirmed the country’s relevance in global maritime decision-making.
Bunu attributed the success to the Minister’s commitment, strategic leadership and effective coordination of an inter-ministerial campaign committee, noting that the result surpassed Nigeria’s previous attempts in 2011 and 2019.
He said the achievement was a product of deliberate planning, intensive engagement and sustained diplomatic efforts.
The MWUN leader also commended the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, for his zeal and dedication to the maritime sector, saying his contributions complemented the Minister’s efforts in securing the IMO council seat.
According to him, greater synergy among maritime regulatory agencies would further unlock the sector’s full potential.
Bunu further praised Oyetola’s handling of the Marine and Blue Economy portfolio, noting that the Minister’s depth of knowledge and vision have continued to exceed expectations. He said Nigeria’s election into the IMO Council has placed the country on a positive global spotlight and raised the standard and profile of its maritime industry.
The MWUN President-General expressed optimism that the development would translate into stronger policies, enhanced international collaboration and improved welfare and opportunities for maritime workers across the country.
