
The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) held a grand end-of-year party for its workers, staff and executives on Friday, December 19, 2025, marking the successful conclusion of the Union’s activities for the year.
The colourful event, held under the leadership of the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, was described by participants as one of the biggest celebrations ever organised by the Union.
As part of the ceremony, outstanding members were rewarded in various categories. In the punctuality category, the Deputy Secretary-General in charge of Administration and Personnel, Comrade John Ekpo, received a cash award of ₦100,000.

Others honoured for punctuality were Comrade John Kessy, Chief Driver of the Union, and Comrade Rotimi, Assistant General Secretary of the Dockworkers Branch, who also received ₦100,000 each.
In the Best Dressed category, Comrade Kenneth Ibanga, Deputy Secretary-General in charge of Protocol and representative of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) in MWUN, emerged winner and received ₦100,000. The General Secretary of the Dockworkers Branch, Comrade Mathew Adele, also received ₦100,000 in the same category.
For the female Best Dressed category, Comrade Akala Mistura of the Union’s Accounts Department was awarded ₦100,000. Others recognised in the category included Funke Apesin, Assistant Secretary-General (Administration), and Serifat Ogbede, Personal Assistant to the President-General, who also received ₦100,000 each.

Comrade Taofeek Adeleke emerged as the best among the Union’s security personnel, while Comrade Martina Njoku, Vice President-General of MWUN, won the open dance competition and received ₦50,000. Other participants received consolation prizes.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of an award to the President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, by the organisers of the “Face of Maritime” initiative. The award was presented by the reigning 2025 “Face of Maritime Queen” during the celebration.
Guests were treated to a wide variety of meals and drinks, with delicacies drawn from the Niger Delta, South-West, South-East and Northern regions of the country, reflecting the Union’s commitment to unity and inclusiveness.

In his remarks, Comrade Bunu thanked members for their discipline, cooperation and show of unity, while commending the organisers of the “Face of Maritime” for sustaining the annual event.
He assured members that future editions would be even more rewarding, stressing that hard work, dedication, punctuality, commitment and loyalty remain the pillars of the Union’s growth.
