MWUN Mourns Ex-VPG Etete, Condemns Killing, Seeks Justice

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has condemned the killing of its former Vice President-General (VPG), Comrade Alfred Etete, describing his death as shocking and a grave loss to the union and his community.

Etete, a respected chief in Agwut-Obolo community in Rivers State, was reportedly shot dead by gunmen at his residence. His killing has drawn widespread outrage from labour circles and community leaders.

In a statement signed by the Head of Media, MWUN, Comrade Ikemefuna, the President-General of the union, Comrade Francis Bunu, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called on security agencies to apprehend those responsible.

Before his retirement, Etete served meritoriously as VPG of MWUN under the Seamen, NIWA and Water Transport Branch. The union said he discharged his duties conscientiously and remained committed to the welfare of workers throughout his active years in service.

Bunu described the late Etete as “a very fine gentleman, a Comrade par excellence and a role model worthy of emulation,” noting that his contributions to labour matters and his cordial relationship with colleagues stood him out.

According to the MWUN President-General, the news of Etete’s death came as a rude shock to the leadership and entire membership of the union. He condemned what he termed the “brutal and senseless killing” and prayed for the repose of his soul.

“Comrade Etete served the union diligently and, after retirement, continued to serve his community with his wealth of experience until his life was abruptly cut short,” he said.

Bunu urged security agencies, particularly the police, to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“No one has the right to take another person’s life in cold blood for any reason whatsoever. For the sake of justice and posterity, the killers must be fished out,” he stated.

While expressing confidence in the capacity of security agencies to unravel the crime, the union extended its condolences to the immediate family of the late labour leader and prayed that God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss.
