Nigerian sprinter, Favour Ofili has revealed that nothing has been done about her omission from the 100 meters event of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
It would be recalled that Ofili announced on Tuesday that she was informed that she will not be participating in the 100m event at the Olympics despite qualifying.
Consequently, she expressed displeasure and called out the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) saying: “It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what?
“Please remember, in the last Olympic Games I was not able to compete because AFN, NADC and NOC failed to release funds for athletes to be tested, which made 14 Nigeria athletes that qualified to not compete. Now THIS……
“If those responsible are NOT held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organization can EVER be trusted in the future! Next one is the 200meters, I HOPE I AM ENTERED.”
The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh reacting to the exclusion of the multiple medalists from the 100m event on Wednesday assured that the issue will be resolved.
Mr. Enoh stated that he will not tolerate utter recklessness, adding that it is highly inexcusable.
However, Ofili on Friday expressed disappointment disclosing that the decision still stands.
“Sadly, nothing has been done…. I’m yet to see or hear anyone is being punished for what the NOC and AFN did to me. Athletes shouldn’t be getting punished for things out of their control.
“Who assigned federations and/or Olympic committees to enter athletes into Olympic Games? Is it World Athletics? If so, should they not hold them accountable when they fail to do their job by not entering athletes in events they qualify and want to compete?
“NOC and AFN……….This is not the first time you guys are doing this so don’t think this is over because is not,” she wrote on X.
Ofili was reportedly registered to compete in the 100m, 200m, and the 4×100m relay respectively.
