Why CGC Adeniyi’s Tenure Was Extended by Six Months – President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has explained why the tenure of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, was extended by six months until February 2027.
ThelensNG reports that President Tinubu approved CGC Adeniyi’s final six-month tenure extension on Friday.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement, noting that Adeniyi’s first tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026.
According to the statement, the six-month extension, which will expire in February 2027, is intended to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window (NSW) and ensure an orderly succession in the Service.
It added that during the transition period, Adeniyi, working with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board, will oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi joined the NCS after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in the late 1980s.
He rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before his appointment by President Tinubu as Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.
